Masuda Kiribako

Rice Bin - Large (5 kg)

$ 176
Exuding warmth, this simple, stackable rice bin is made by Masuda Kiribako, a specialist shop founded in 1929, and features an ingenious lid.

Kiribako are boxes made of paulownia wood. Paulownia has humidity-controlling and insect-repelling properties that keep rice fresh and protect its flavor. This box is also suitable for storing brown rice, wheat, beans, millet, cereals, and other grains. Available in three sizes, boxes of different sizes may also be stacked together – the height of a 1 kg (2.2 lb) box and a 3 kg (6.6 lb) box stacked together is equivalent to the height of a 5 kg (11 lb) box.
Because the lid is made of highly-transparent acrylic, the contents of the bin are easily visible. Developed especially for this bin, the lid utilizes shihosan, a traditional kiribako lid-fitting technique that makes the bin airtight (as well as keeping the lid from popping off in the case the bin tips over). The lid also hooks onto the edge of the bin, a convenient feature when refilling. What’s more, the reverse side of the lid contains a magnet to which one can attach a measuring cup so that the cup does not become buried in the rice.
