Nanao Japanese Candles
Designed with nature in mind, the unique shape of each candle of this set is inspired by a different plant that grows in the region where they’re made.
Named after the city where Takazawa Candle is situated, the heart of the glorious countryside, this set of five candles has a different motif for each one, representing a plant that grows in the Noto Peninsula. Along with this, the candles are all named after a letter of the word “plant.”
Japanese candles are made of plant-based wax that generates less soot than other types of candles. Wicks are made by carefully wrapping dried rushes one by one around a core of Japanese paper. This process creates a cavity that extends to the top of the wick; lighting the wick incorporates air into the cavity, which in turn sucks the flame inward and causes it to sway back and forth. The unique phenomenon of a flame that flickers even without the presence of wind also means that the candle will not easily go out.
Established in 1892 in the port city of Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, Takazawa Candle’s products stand out not only in their quality, but also in their unique candle designs and shapes, calling to mind various scenes of nature, particularly those of plants found in the city of Nanao. By using a special wick made from a unique recipe that dates back to the 16th century. The wick is made by winding dried rushes around a hollow cord of wa-shi (Japanese paper.) By having a hollow core, oxygen is able to be drawn up from the bottom so that the flame consumes more melted wax, thus making their candles’ flames burn bigger and brighter. Their candles call to mind ancestral wisdom, symbolizing the relationship between their ancestors and nature, and are all made from plant-based materials such as sumac wax, rice bran, and rapeseed flower oil.
