Masuda Kiribako Rice Bin - Small (1 kg)

  • Exuding warmth, this simple rice bin is made by Masuda Kiribako, a long-established shop founded in 1929 specializing in kiribako, or boxes made of paulownia wood. Paulownia wood has humidity-controlling and insect-repelling properties, keeping rice delicious when cooked. In addition, this box is also suitable for storing brown rice, wheat, beans, millet, cereals, and other grains. Available in three sizes, boxes of different sizes may also be stacked together – the height of a 1 kg (2.2 lb) box and a 3 kg (6.6 lb) box stacked together is equivalent to the height of a 5 kg (11 lb) box.

The contents of the bin are easily visible because the lid is made of highly-transparent acrylic. Developed especially for this bin, the lid also utilizes shihosan, a traditional kiribako technique of placing four bars on the reverse side, resulting in a durable lid. A shihosan lid makes the bin airtight; and the lid does not easily pop out even if the bin tips over. There are two grooves at the bars behind the lid which allow the lid to hook onto the edges of the bin, a convenient feature for when the bin needs refilling. The reverse side of the lid also contains a magnet which can be used to attach the one cup-sized measuring cup to it, which prevents the measuring cup from being buried and stored in the rice.
